You can now test for Cotinine (Nicotine metabolite) at 3 different levels in one nicotine test! Nicotine is the chemical found in tobacco cigarettes, vapes, and tobacco chewing gum.
Long term use of tobacco products can be detrimental to ones health including lung disease, heart disease, worsen asthma, blood clots etc.
As nicotine enters your body, it breaks down and turns into a chemical called cotinine (the metabolite of nicotine). Cotinine has a half life in the body for up to 40 hours, where nicotine has a half life of up to 4 hours.
Nicotine/cotinine testing maybe used in a few different situations, such as tobacco abstinence programs, employment possibilities, life insurance evaluations etc.
The 3 cotinine cut off levels are,
- 50ng/ml
- 200ng/ml
- 400ng/ml
1st level – 50ng/ml Usually this strip is non-negative within 4-5 days of nicotine inhalation.
2nd level – 200ng/ml This strip is non-negative within 2-3 days of nicotine inhalation.
3rd level – 400ng/ml This strip is non-negative within 24 hours of nicotine inhalation.
Like all drug testing devices…non-negative results must be confirmed in a lab by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS)
